Why Fire Hydrant Testing Matters

A fire hydrant only has one job, and it has to do it perfectly the moment firefighters arrive. Between emergencies, hydrants sit exposed to weather, traffic, and time. This can cause stem seizing, cap rusting on the threads, sediment collecting in the barrel, and underground valve freezing in place. Any one of these can slow or stop water delivery when evey second matter.

For private hydrants on your property; in parking lots, business parks, campuses, and multifamily communities the inspection, testing, and maintenance fall under NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems. Responsibility sits with the property owner or a designated representative, and the work must be carried out by qualified personnel. Staying on schedule keeps your property compliant, keeps your insurer satisfied, and keeps the hydrant ready.

Our Fire Hydrant Services

Under NFPA 25, Chapter 7, every private hydrant is tested at least once a year: opened fully and flowed until the water runs clear (a minimum of one minute to confirm proper operation), then drained and lubricated. On a five-year cycle, a full flow test following the NFPA 291 procedure measures the hydrant's actual rated capacity, which is also when the underground fire service mains are flow tested. Your local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) may require shorter intervals, and we schedule to whichever applies to your site.

A documented visual and mechanical check of each hydrant: clear access and visibility, secure and undamaged outlet caps, intact threads, no leaks or corrosion, and proper barrel drainage on dry-barrel hydrants (standing water can freeze or point to a failed drain valve). We flag anything that would delay a firefighter and record it for your compliance file.

Following NFPA 291, we record static pressure at a test hydrant, open a nearby flow hydrant, and read the residual and pitot pressures to calculate available flow in gallons per minute (GPM) at 20 psi residual pressure. That result determines the hydrant's flow class and the color it should be marked. It's the same data your AHJ and insurer rely on.

We repair worn seats, stems, gaskets, and operating nuts; rebuild or replace barrels damaged by corrosion or vehicle impact; and install new hydrants on private fire service mains in accordance with NFPA 24. If a hydrant fails a test, we correct the deficiency and retest so your records stay compliant.

NFPA 25 calls for annual lubrication of stems, caps, plugs, and threads so the hydrant opens smoothly under pressure and the caps come off by hand in an emergency. A seized stem or a cap rusted in place can cost responders critical minutes.

Outlet caps protect the threads and keep debris, insects, and tampering out of the hydrant. Missing or damaged caps expose the threads to corrosion and can prevent a fast, clean hose connection. We replace damaged caps and chains as part of service.

Every hydrant is fed by an isolation (gate) valve that has to close in order to shut the hydrant down for repair or after a main break. Valves that are never operated tend to seize. We locate and exercise these valves so they turn freely the moment they're needed.

Repainting keeps a hydrant visible and preserves its NFPA 291 flow-class color coding, so responders can read its capacity at a glance. We refinish corroded or faded hydrants and apply the correct bonnet and cap colors.

Reflective pavement markers (typically blue) are set into the roadway to mark hydrant locations so crews can spot them instantly, day or night. We install and replace these markers as part of routine service.

Understanding NFPA 291 Flow Classifications

When a hydrant is flow tested, its result is expressed as a class based on how much water it delivers at 20 psi residual pressure. NFPA 291 pairs each class with a marking color so firefighters can judge a hydrant's capacity on sight:

Bar length represents relative flow capacity. Classifications are measured at 20 psi residual pressure. NFPA 291 is a recommended practice; color marking applies where your local Authority Having Jurisdiction has adopted it, and private hydrants are often marked separately from public ones.
